HI! Nova Newborn Photographer here! Just found out you are expecting or just had a baby? You probably thought about a newborn session for your little one! You probably looked around and some of you know what type of session you want, some other's don't. It may seem very daunting at the start of your search, understandably so. I'm going to walk you through the process of a newborn session. Every photographer operates a little differently, however, this is my process and breakdown of these sessions and differences between having a session in my studio or in your home.

Ok, so lets say  you are looking around at newborn photographers in our area, and stumble upon mine. Maybe something catches your eyes and you like my style, editing, work, prices etc. You are probably in one of the stages:

A- Expecting found out not too long ago and are so excited  so you just  started to look around at newborn images and newborn photographers

B- Expecting and are in your second or third trimester and are looking around at work and Investment shopping to do a booking

C- Thrird trimester and baby is almost here and you know wanted a newborn session but you have not had a chance to even really think about booking  a newborn session, or maybe youve been meaning to and thought about it here and there but had no time to sit down and do a booking

D-  You could still be expecting or baby is here. You have been following my work for a while and love my work and have looked over my packages and reach out to me,  ready to book!

Usually you can reach me via social media messages ( I'm on Facebook, Instagram and TT), email from my website, phone call which you can find from social media and website.

We will begin to discuss how far along you are, or if baby is here, how old baby is. From there we discuss packages and wether you want a studio or in home newborn session. For both, the desired age for a newborn session is usually between 7-14 days old. Before they are two weeks old because at that age they are still very sleepy, more poseable and moldable for those cute newborn photos you see. When they get past that age, they tend to be  more alert, less sleepy and less moldable and able to be swaddled or in a poseable state as earlier. Also, I've noticed that baby acne sometimes start to show up around week 3.

Studio newborn sessions are ideal, because lighting in my studio is always pretty constant and abundant. I have a white studio with large floor to celing windows with sheer white curtains. Even if it is gloomy outside, My studio still gets lots of light, but if it dark, I do have studio lights which we can use. I rarely use them due to the pretty natural lighting though which makes having a studio session pretty awesome.  We discuss in advance the setups and props you would like. But another great thing  about a studio session is all  my props are there so if we decide to switch setups or you see another prop you'd rather use, its right there. I have a heater, shushing sound machine, changing table with wipes and diapers available, snacks and water, couch to relax and watch the session or if parents want to take a quick snooze during the baby portion of the session, they can do so right there! The environment will  be warm and cozy and I've had many parents do a quick nap ( rightfully so cause, well, sleep deprivation does a number on people). It is easy to find in Reston, right there by RTC and near many restaurants.

While I love studio newborn sessions, I always can appreciate in home newborn sessions. I know that there are times  many parents may have difficulty leaving the home around that time. They could have had a c sec or complicated delivery and their recovery is very  hard. They may have other small/young toddlers or children and its very difficult to get them out of the house so having a session in the home is much easier. They could just have an exhausted or anxious mom/ dad and say you know, lets justt have the photographer come to us. Whatever the case may be, I can come to you and I bring everything to you. We will plan out setups/ props and we will discuss where the photos will be takem within your home and I bring everything to you, even my studio lighting if your home doesn't get that much natural lighting. I only need a minimal amount of room for the baby portaits, ideally by a window with decent lighting and I am good to go. For the family portaits, they are done usually in the living room, sitting room, parents bed, nursery. For the baby portraits, you would never know it was done in your home, they would look like you were in the studio. Both are great, depends on which you would prefer. Here are some examples of both:
